Urban design and site plan for Xunpu center

Through the redesign of a financial district in the urban expansion area of Quanzhou, there was the possibility to create a special and unique feature for the city in conjunction with a landmarked village center. The core idea of the design concept isolated the historically protected area of the town as a sort of island with a surrounding moat. This newly proposed moat created together with the surrounding architectural high points, a clear separation between the old (traditional, rather low) and new (modern, rather higher) buildings.Nevertheless, the pedestrian network in the old town as planned to be integrated with the new town to ensure seamless transmissions and high quality spaces, which are required for use of a CBD. The dense and high areas were gathered to the financial center as the main center, which included some small sub-centers. The new network of paths connecting these centers with each other allowed for short walking distances within the planning area. Another highlight at the end point of the major axis was a new exhibition area at the sea. This was an architectural feature that also reinforced the unique feature of Quanzhou city.Characteristic of the design were the buildings in an arc, which define the spaces and allow people to experience the main corridors, the water and the green strip in the north. The opposite height profiles in the rising skylines created an exciting and interesting city skyline that could be seen from all four perspectives presented in the new financial district with the old town as special district.
